| Inhalt | Long before it was conquered and colonized by European powers in the late nineteenth century, West Africa was connected to the outside world through long-distance trade. Trans-Saharan trails linking the Niger bend to the North African shores of the Mediterranean, overland paths and fluvial itineraries from the Sahel to the tropical forest as well as nautical routes between the European subcontinent, the “coasts of Guinea” and the Americas provided a multipolar commercial infrastructure spanning over different ecological zones. This web catalysed the circulation of ideas, religious beliefs, animals, plants, merchandise as well as men, women and children. Over the last millennium, human captives played a major (and in some periods clearly predominant) role in these commercial relations. On a whole, however, the history of trade in West Africa cannot be reduced to the deportation of slaves. West Africa exported a variety of goods to external markets and, in turn, it imported European, Asian and American merchandise as well as commodities produced in – or traded through – the lands of Islam. Many of them represented highly prized prestige items and had a lasting impact on tastes, aesthetic styles and patterns of consumption in sub-Saharan societies. In order to examine actors, practices and goods involved in maritime and continental long-distance trade in precolonial West Africa this M.A. seminar will adopt a longue durée perspective: while we will mainly focus on the 15th-19th centuries, we will repeatedly go beyond that time frame and look back to earlier periods. Thereby we will discuss how commercial flows contributed to the transformation of material culture and social practices and how imported commodities were charged with new meanings and inscribed into specific regional cultural contexts. |

Bachelorstudierende weisen den Abschluss der Grundstufe des BSF Geschichte nach (mindestens 3 Proseminare und 3 Proseminararbeiten). Bei Überbelegung wird die Teilnehmerzahl beschränkt. In diesem Fall werden Studierende der Geschichte bevorzugt zugelassen. |
