| Inhalt | The course will review migrant transnational political engagement in home politics, at destination and at the international level. Political transnationalism covers a wide range of activities, which can be studied using a variety of approaches. The course will cover two main aspects of political transnationalism: a) practices of migrants and b) institutional approach of local organizations, nation-states and international organizations. The first part looks at migrants' networks and activities that involve them in politics oriented towards their country of origin. Second, the course discusses migrant engagement in the destination countries through many political forms, including not only voting but also social mobilization. There are many ways of residents’ engagement with the host country, which are not restricted to full citizens of the state. Immigrants may express disagreement about public policies, have access to various social programmes or be involved in lobbying. The course will make an overview of various forms of engagement and their modalities in terms of issue-specific or ethnic mobilizations. What makes migrant transnationalism specific is that it creates overlapping affiliations between countries, regions, or other polities. We will therefore address phenomena referred to as “social citizenship” or “substantive citizenship”, which go beyond political citizenship and affect migrant and native populations. Besides the bottom-up perspectives, the course will cover the top-down institutional approaches of interested polities at regional, national and international level. It will address various types of diaspora engagement policies from state and non-state actors and investigate their goals and strategies. |
| Lernziele | The main objective of this course is to provide students with the knowledge and techniques necessary to address political transnationalism from a interdisciplinary perspective. The course includes practical guidance on finding appropriate sources and allows students to discuss and think critically about the reasons for and effects of migrants political engagement. |

| Teilnahmebedingungen | Grundstudium abgeschlossen. Die Teilnehmerzahl ist aus Gründen der Qualitätssicherung der Lehre auf 25 beschränkt. Die Teilnehmenden werden nach Fachrichtung, Studiengang und in der Reihenfolge ihrer Anmeldung auf die Liste gesetzt. Wer im Rahmen von Auslandaufenthalten und von Austauschprogrammen in Basel studiert wird unabhängig vom Listenplatz immer aufgenommen. English fluency. |
| Anmeldung zur Lehrveranstaltung | Metka.hercog@unibas.ch Lehrveranstaltungen mit beschränkter Teilnehmerzahl können ab 01.08.2015 bis 01.09.2015 über MOnA belegt werden. Die Zuteilung erfolgt durch die Dozierenden. Bis 12.09.2015 erhalten alle definitiv aufgenommenen Studierenden eine Bestätigungsmail des Dozierenden. Wer an der ersten Sitzung einer Veranstaltung dennoch unentschuldigt fehlt, wird von der Liste gestrichen. In der ersten Sitzung einer Veranstaltung oder per Mail in der Woche der ersten Sitzung erfahren Studierende auf einer Warteposition, ob sie doch teilnehmen können. |
