45367-01 - Seminar: The Political Economy of the European Crisis 3 KP

Semester Herbstsemester 2016
Angebotsmuster einmalig
Dozierende Silvana-Maria Târlea (s.tarlea@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt Is the European project meant to fail? The difficulties encountered by the European Union (EU) have been making the headlines all over the world since 2008. Why has the EU encountered problems and what are the prospects for its future? What has the EU taken away from national governments and what has it contributed to their wellbeing? How has this differed in Greece, the United Kingdom and how have the Swiss been influenced? These questions are discussed in this course. It covers material from political science, economics and European integration literature as widely understood. The course shows how crises arise, how they can be analysed and possibly solved.
Lernziele By the end of the course students will understand the political and economic foundations of the European Union. They will recognize the roots of the European project and its consequences in the crises witnessed since its foundation. They will distinguish between political and economic factors. Students will be able to engage in debates on these topics and to build their own theory-driven arguments about current events. These will be expressed in a written essay and in a class presentation.

Teilnahmebedingungen The course requires students to be familiar with basic notions about the European Union, its history and institutions. Most readings will be in English, some in German. Essays can be written in either German or English. Students’ class presentations are to be given in English.
