| Inhalt | Drawing on current research on South Africa’s apartheid era, this course will allow you to explore various ways of thinking, researching and writing about ‘the everyday’ from a historiographical perspective. The course is built around three forms of exercise: Firstly, we will do close-readings of key theoretical texts to get a good sense of different ways in which we can think the everyday: Is the everyday that which is ordinary and boring? Should we look for it in the intensity of smells, sounds and colours that characterise a particular everyday environment? Do we find the everyday in rhythm and repetition as suggested by Henri Lefebvre, or is it more productive to think of the everyday as travelling in time and space (Michel De Certeau)? The aim here is to practise reading selected portions of (at times confusing) theoretical texts and making sense of them in our own words. Secondly, we will examine different ways of grounding theory in empirical work. We will do so by reading existing research articles on everyday life under apartheid. Here, we will compare the different ways in which these authors frame the kind of ‘everyday’ they are studying; the kinds of historical data they use; how they work with that data and how they link it to theoretical questions. Thirdly, we will ourselves experiment with possible readings of selected historical sources (e.g. a set of letters, a map, minutes from a council meeting). What kinds of histories and what qualities of everyday can we tease out of a particular historical source? Can working with a particular source even help us make better sense of a concept? All elements of the course are aimed at students of history who wish to improve their skills in working with theory. |
