| Inhalt | This seminar offers an interdisciplinary engagement with politics and state-society relations in contemporary sub-Saharan Africa. We will read, discuss and reflect on the multiple dynamics, practices and meanings that are associated with public authority, sovereignty and statehood across the continent. Bringing together theories and insights from political sociology, political anthropology, political science and political geography, we will debate thorny questions such as: what is the nature of post-colonial states in Africa? How do these states shape citizenship, subjectivities and community relations? How can we best understand politics both within and beyond the state without either exoticizing or downplaying local power relations? Which political trajectories and modernities emerge? And finally, what does the study of African politics tell us about other including our own societies? This seminar is for MA students with a keen interest in the analysis of politics, political life and state-society relations in sub-Saharan Africa and beyond. Each session is dedicated to a particular concept or political phenomenon, which we explore both conceptually and empirically. Students are required to read one academic article as well as one short piece in preparation for each session. Academic articles are mostly classics in the field of politics oriented African studies. Short pieces are drawn from news reports, literature and other sources. Students will work on a particular African or other non-European case study, which they pursue throughout the seminar, applying the various concepts discussed to their case. Each student will undertake one PechaKucha presentation of his or her case study. While the first hour of the seminar is dedicated to conceptual presentation and debate, the second hour revolves around current examples and empirical cases. This is an interactive seminar, driven by the curiosity and preparation of all participants. |
| Lernziele | The three main learning objectives of this seminar are: • Participants are familiar with key concepts and debates on public authority, state-society relations and political power in contemporary sub-Saharan Africa; • Participants practice applying heterodox theories and concepts to different empirical realities and vice versa; • Participants gain a more refined understanding of modern politics in Africa beyond normative and institutionalist Western conceptions of the political. |
