| Inhalt | Located in Western Europe, Switzerland is a member of the Council of Europe (famous for its Human Rights Convention) but not of the, in particular economically very important, European Union (EU). This course elucidates the special challenges of Switzerland as a non-member state of the EU and examines its perception by other states, be they members or non-members of the EU. The course also discusses what this perception might imply for other states. The course has a particular focus on much debated issues such as money (e.g. taxation, banking secrecy), the debate about curbing immigration (asylum, free movement of persons) and the future of the legal relationship between Switzerland and the EU, as well as the consequences of these issues vis-à-vis and within the EU. More generally, the course deals with the issue of regional integration against the background of global rules. The course offers a legal and political look at the relationship between Switzerland and the European Union (EU). The course consists of a 6-weeks online part consisting of a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) and 3 face-to-face seminar sessions (see „Comments“). |
| Lernziele | The course enables learners to understand the complexities that influence the legal relations between the European Union and Switzerland. Learners become aware of the preconditions shaping the momentary situation – including its history. Learners also reflect on the effect the special situation of Switzerland has for the debate in other countries. Learners are encouraged to reflect upon current events on the basis of the insights gained through the course. |
| Literatur | Texts and materials (including, among others, videos) will be accessible on the online platform FutureLearn which hosts the MOOC. |
| Bemerkungen | The online part of this course is one a number of MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) projects of Basel University. The MOOC “Switzerland in Europe – Money, Migration and other Difficult Matters” has been produced at Basel University, and more particularly its Europainstitut or Institute for European Global Studies, in cooperation with the online learning platform FutureLearn (www.futurelearn.com). In the first face-to-face session, the concept of online learning via a MOOC will be explained to the students. |
