45001-01 - Seminar: Business, Law and Economic Policy 6 KP

Semester Herbstsemester 2022
Angebotsmuster Jahreskurs
Dozierende Jeffrey Macher (jeffrey.macher@unibas.ch)
Rolf Weder (rolf.weder@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt This course is considered to be a highlight of the Summer School of Law, Business and Economic Policy, in particular, and of the MSc in Business and Economics, in general.

The target is to give master students an opportunity to write a seminar paper in English (that may be considered to be a first step towards the master’s thesis), to present the conclusions to an international audience of researchers at Georgetown University and New York University and discuss the results.
Lernziele Students will deepen their knowledge by:

1. Writing an original scientific paper on an interesting topic that may serve as a first step to a Master's thesis.

2. Presenting the most important findings to a demanding audience in English in the U.S.

3. Getting to know a number of well-established institutions such as the Worldbank from the inside and being able to ask good questions and discuss critical issues with high-level representatives.

4. Developing a network with professors of the partner universities as well as with representatives of the institutions to be visited. This may be helpful for the individual careers particularly in terms of internships, Master theses or PhDs as experience shows.
Literatur Students identify the relevant literature under the supervision of Prof. Rolf Weder (University of Basel) and Prof. Jeffrey Macher (Georgetown University).
Bemerkungen We recommend to those students whose research project has been accepted to use the time to also discuss the topics with the professors engaged in the Summer School, teaching at the University of Basel in July and August.

Furthermore, we encourage the students getting in touch with a member of the Faculty of Business and Economics of the University of Basel in order to investigate whether the research project has the potential for a master thesis at a later stage. This can be done at any stage of the colloquium.

Note that some students may get a chance to write their master's thesis under the co-supervision by a professor from Georgetown University or New York University, depending on their performance in the seminar.

Teilnahmebedingungen Students have to be enrolled in one of the master programs offered by the Faculty of Business and Economics of the University of Basel (exceptions are possible, for example for PhD students).

Enrollment is necessary in the fall semester (writing the paper) AND the spring semester (presentation of the paper and visits to the institutions).
Anmeldung zur Lehrveranstaltung There will be an orientation event on 16 May 2022; 18:15 - 18:45 (Seminar room S15, Peter Merian-Weg 6).

Please submit a research proposal (3-4 pages) until 4 July 2022 in which you explain your idea, the main research question and how you intend to answer the question. You should mention a possible theory that may help to find an answer and describe the empirical analysis (do you intend to do a case study or do you want to analyze data you have identified?). Name three to four important pieces of the literature that is relevant to your research.
Attractive topics, for example, include a comparison of regulations, policies or institutions (in the USA, Europe, Switzerland). They may integrate business and economic aspects or be based in the area of law and economics. We are very open regarding the topics, but reward quality and originality. For examples, see also the list of accepted topics of former seminars.

You will be informed by mid-July 2022 (for late applications afterwards), whether you are accepted to the master seminar. A maximum of 20 students will be admitted to the seminar.
