70497-01 - Seminar: Visualizing and Communicating Data with R 1 KP

Semester Herbstsemester 2023
Angebotsmuster unregelmässig
Dozierende Dorothee Bentz (dorothee.bentz@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt The workshop will be given by Dr. Dirk Wulff, Max Planck Institute for Human Development, Berlin, Germany.

Modern open-source software packages offer ever more powerful tools for a critical step in any data analytic project: creating and communicating data visualizations. However, only when these tools are applied with psychological and design principles in mind do they produce effective visualizations that achieve their purposes. In this workshop, participants learn how to employ state-of-the-art data visualization tools within the programming language R to create stunning, publication-ready data visualizations that communicate critical insights about data. Furthermore, participants learn to apply fundamental principles of data visualization design to their own work. Each participant will bring a data visualization problem and work on its design during the workshop. After the workshop, participants are expected to work on implementing their visualization and, ultimately, share it with the workshop presenter for a final round of feedback. The course assumes a working knowledge of R and RStudio. Prior experience with the R tidyverse will be advantageous and can be acquired from https://posit.cloud/learn/primers.
