Inhalt Militant research – also called participatory action or engaged research – tries to bridge academia and activism while trying to critically analyse the society we live in. It questions not only the researcher's objectivity, positionality, and the value-loadedness of science and knowledge as such, but also the position of the university within our society.
The goal of militant research is to bring about change by creating “living knowledge.” Hence, it is intrinsically normative, and clashes with traditional approaches to “objective,” “neutral” science. A further challenge to traditional research, its exclusivity, egocentricity, and hierarchy is the participatory, collaborative, and egalitarian nature of militant research.
This seminar is an interdisciplinary introduction to militant research in the social sciences, and the methods and theories associated with it. Militant research works in and with the movements and peoples it is concerned with. It is a committed and intense process of internal reflection from within a particular struggle that simultaneously seeks to map out and discuss its underlying antagonisms, and contribute to its advancement.
This seminar will discuss the history of militant research, conceptualise the different methodologies and critically discuss their benefits, challenges, and limitations by questioning the relationship between theory and practice, university research and social impact, as well as militant research and political participation. The seminar participants will present and study selected militant research case studies, with possible topics ranging from anti-gentrification struggles, community self-organization, feminist collectives, the squatting movement, radical art, or animal liberation.
The course will further examine the process of doing militant research with an emphasis on the ethics, positionality, and subjectivity of the researcher her/himself. Ethical questions focusing on the researcher’s agency, integrity and confidentiality will be discussed. Antagonisms of the position of researchers from both inside the university and as a member of society will be explored by asking questions such as:
- How do we position ourselves within university and society structures?
- Why are we doing research? For what purpose? For whom? Is someone (or something) benefiting from our academic knowledge?
- What roles do our sources of funding play in our research and study processes?
- What privileges allow us to become researchers/students? How do these factors shape our outlook /choice of subjects?
- How do our epistemological and ontological views influence our research?
- What are the methodological (i.e., ethnographic), theoretical, and personal challenges of navigating between an academic and activist positionality?
