| Inhalt | This Übung is dedicated to two central processes of transposing language across media: subtitling and transcription. Transcription is a central step in the analysis of discourse: By representing spoken interaction in written form, it turns occurring events into analyzable linguistic data. Subtitling, on the other hand, is a form of audiovisual translation that makes film dialogue accessible to speakers of the same or of a different language. It is the result of a particular type of translation, characterized by a number of constraints, and therefore typically studied as part of Audiovisual Translation (AVT), which is a sub-discipline of Translation Studies. Typically, the two practices are performed in different domains, by different agents and for a different audience: Whereas subtitling is done by a particular type of professional translator for the target audience of the subtitled film, transcription is done by linguistic researchers for an academic readership. However, they share the goal of selecting particular aspects of spoken interaction and making them accessible for their audience. This course will bring both processes together and follow two trajectories: On the one hand, we will explore the transcription of linguistic data from a range of sources, but with a particular focus on multimodal data from film and television, which may include language as well as gestures, facial expressions, the mise-en-scène, camera work etc. On the other hand, we will look at subtitling in particular, and at audiovisual translation more generally, in order to gain insights into the linguistic study of specific translation processes and their products. The Übung will be useful to students who want to improve their data transcription skills as well as to anyone interested in getting a first overview of audiovisual translation. Preparatory reading will be provided on ADAM; students will be required to transcribe a range of short excerpts of data. |
