| Inhalt | Human beings are wonderfully creative. The creative potential of human minds is directly reflected in language structure and use. This lecture explores different approaches to language-related creativity. It primarily adopts a cognitive-linguistic stance but also integrates alternative core-linguistic, pragmatic, and psycholinguistic theories. First the key terms 'creativity' and 'linguistic creativity' are defined and problematized to demonstrate that any model of language-based creativity fundamentally depends on a) what linguistic phenomena are regarded as being potentially creative and b) on how the working principles of the creative human mind are theorized. The language-creativity nexus is then traced by outlining how shifts in cognitive science have had a direct impact on models of linguistic creativity. Cognitivist orientations are mirrored in Chomsky's computational view of linguistic creativity as well as traditional pragmatic and relevance theoretical views of non-conventional language use. The embodied view of the mind is shown to fundamentally underlie the cognitive-linguistic accounts of creative and figurative language in terms of conceptual metaphor/metonymy, conceptual integration/blending, and alternative mental construal processes. Finally, accounts of linguistic creativity from the perspective of situated, mediated, and socially-distributed cognition are claimed to constitute a research lacuna that is only about to develop. Along these lines, several phenomena that reflect linguistic creativity are scrutinized: syntactic and lexical productivity, idiom variation and variability, metaphor and metonymy, humor and irony, as well as poetic and literary language (use). In doing so, we will also engage with long-standing problems such as: Are there conceptual metaphors and metonymies or can figurative language be explained on the basis of more basic psycholinguistic processes? Can conceptual blending be regarded as a general theory of cognitive creativity or is it merely a convenient heuristic to reconstruct creative linguistic phenomena post hoc? By engaging with such controversies, it is also shown how hermeneutic, experimental, and corpus-based methods have contributed to the study of linguistic creativity. Moreover, suggestions are made on how such methods could be extended to account for the analysis of situated, mediated, and multimodal accounts of creative language use. |
