Inhalt | After centuries of representations through the eyes and voices of colonial and colonising forces, Native American - and, consequently, Canadian First Nations - writers started acquiring agency for their own views and positions in the 20th century. We will read a selection of texts from both well- and lesser-known authors and discuss issues like multiculturalism vs. autochthonous identity, race and class, trauma and recovery, and sustainability. |
Lernziele | Students will become familiar with some of the theoretical bases and critical tools for dealing with cultural product lines; and in this case with the structural as well as individual ambivalence of (self-)representations of Native American and Canadian First Nations people. |
Literatur | Students should acquire the following texts: - Leslie Silko, "Ceremony" - Sherman Alexie, "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian" - Tomson Highway "The Rez Sisters" - Drew Hayden Taylor "Bootlegger Blues" Other, shorter texts will be made available. |
