| Inhalt | In Discourse Analysis, a core area of sociolinguistics, language is understood as socially and historically situated practice, rather than a relatively autonomous system of knowledge. This discursive shift in linguistics can also be observed in more recent cognitive science, which has turned away from traditional cognitivism towards accounts of situated, distributed, and (inter)actional cognition. However, along with this development from the individual to the social, many discourse analytical accounts of sense-making (e.g. Conversation Analysis and Discursive Psychology) seem to have basically thrown the cognition baby out with the anti-cognitivist bathwater. While rightfully stressing the social and interactional basis of cognitive representations and processes, they often highlight the social dimensions to the extent of rejecting central cognitive concepts such as cognitive representation or (autonomous) cognitive processing completely. Thereby, they run the risk of analysing social processes of sense-making without having a genuine theory of meaning and understanding. In this lecture, the classical approaches to analysing discourse, i.e. language as social interaction including Pragmatics and Speech Act Theory, Conversation Analysis, Discursive Psychology, Critical Discourse Analysis, Interactional Sociolinguistics and Ethnography of Communication are scrutinised, discussed and reviewed from the perspective of cognitive science in order to detect both the social and the cognitive components that they attribute to processes of sense making. In doing so, students are expected to gain deeper insight into the highly complex and fascinating phenomenon of meaning and sense-making. |
