Inhalt | Rarely associated with the European Middle Ages in past research, new findings by scholars demonstrate that forms of medieval slavery were more widespread than previously thought. By the middle of the fourteenth century, a slaving zone had emerged that linked the different geographic regions of Western Europe, North Africa, the eastern Mediterranean, and the Black Sea together. In this course, students will gain an understanding of the demographic, economic, social, and religious dimensions of late medieval Mediterranean slavery. Students will engage with case studies from various geographical regions, along with general theories, to challenge past stereotypical assumptions and to consider medieval slavery from an inter-disciplinary perspective. |
