Inhalt | The twentieth century represented a uniquely exciting period for the American theatre. The emergence of Broadway signalled the beginning of American entertainment culture and industry as they are known today, while alternative theatre groups and movements such as the Provincetown Players, the Theatre Guild, or Group Theatre also gained ground. This proliferation of opportunities for playwrights gave rise, over the course of the century, to an astounding diversity of plays. In the twenty-first century, this diversity persists or even increases as realist plays are being performed alongside daringly experimental ones. This course focuses on 'modernist' American plays, rather than on mainstream productions, and it traces the legacies of modernist aesthetics in the American theatre up to the twenty-first century. |
