Inhalt | The Anglo-Irish writer Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) is well known for his novel "The Picture of Dorian Gray" (1890) and his entertaining plays. He also wrote fairy tales and essays on subjects such as socialism, marriage, or interior design. Placed on the edge of two worlds, Ireland and England, as well as hetero- and homosexuality, his work delivers a unique view of Victorian society. This seminar will explore the 'Fin de Siècle' and its aesthetic movements through his words and wit, and will analyse the intersections between society, art, and literature. |
Lernziele | The students will gain insight into the literary and artistic developments at the end of the nineteenth century, as well as Irish studies, performance theory, Victorian material culture, and other relevant foci. |
