60325-01 - Proseminar: Land, Property, and Belonging 3 KP

Semester Frühjahrsemester 2021
Angebotsmuster einmalig
Dozierende Miriam Badoux (miriam.badoux@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt Property is more than a mere technical or legal term. In the 1960s, anthropologist Max Gluckman defined property as a social and political relation. In anthropology, property is a transversal topic located at the crossroads of the sub-disciplines of legal anthropology, political anthropology, economic anthropology, and environmental anthropology. Land and property can be fruitful entry points to explore past and contemporary debates in the discipline and beyond. How do land and property relate to colonialism and neoliberalism? Can the concepts of land and property allow us to challenge and deconstruct dichotomies such as individual vs. collective, public vs. private, rural vs. urban, formal vs. informal?

In this proseminar, we explore the concepts of land, property, and belonging by reading key anthropological texts on these topics, as well as by looking into specific case studies from the global North and the global South. We will gain insights into a variety of sub-topics such as housing and evictions, urban governance, natural resources management, large-scale land acquisitions, or land reforms.
Lernziele - The students are familiar with key anthropological theories and debates around land and property
- The students are able to analyse specific case studies within a wider context and to place these into disciplinary debates
- The students improve their abilities to critically read and discuss academic texts, to hold presentations and moderate discussions, and to write short essays
Literatur A list of the relevant literature will be distributed at the beginning of the semester. The texts will be made available on ADAM.
Bemerkungen Depending on the participants' skills and preferences, this proseminar can be taught in English or German.
