Inhalt | The course provides an introduction into the basics of European Union law, including notably: 1) The origins of the European Union; 2) Its consitutional principles; 3) The special nature of European Union law as compared to more traditional public international law; 4) The particular role of the European Court of Justice for the legal system of the European Union; 5) The European Union's internal market and competition law. 6) The course will also touch on recent or on-going developments. Important note: This is a flipped classroom course with elements of blended learning! See below, under "Bemerkungen". |
Lernziele | 1) Students understand the basics of European Union law. 2) Students are able to place news items related to the European Union in the framework of what they learn in the course, and they are able to reflect critically on them. |
Literatur | Christa Tobler/Jacques Beglinger, Essential EU Law in Charts and Text, 2 volumes, 5th, "post-Brexit" edition, Budapest: HVG-ORAC 2020 (neu: ORAC KIADÓ KFT.), ISBN 978-963-258-491-1 (for the combo of both books); see generally about the books also www.eur-charts.eu. Note: in most class meetings, we will work actively with the charts. There is a companion text to the charts which is intended to put some flesh around the Charts, by linking them to each other through text. The text booklet also contains exercises. Reading in the text will be part of the preparations in this course. A certain number of these books is available for use by the students in the "Semesterapparat" in the library of the Europainstitut/Institute for European Global Studies. For those who wish to buy private copties of the Chart and Text books: a) A limited number of copies of the books is available for direct purchase through the secretariat of the Europainstitut. b) Alternatively, please order the books WELL IN ADVANCE in order to ensure that you have them in time for the course. We recommend buying the combination package (Charts & Text - note: BOTH of them!) from the Librairie Européenne in Brussels (https://www.libeurop.eu/shop/product/9789632584898-essential-eu-law-in-charts-5th-post-brexit-edition-2020-656091 AND https://www.libeurop.eu/shop/product/9789632584904-essential-eu-law-in-text-5th-post-brexit-edition-2020-656090). Note that ordering the books directly from the publishing house has become very expensive due to raised shipping costs to Switzerland but considerably less so in the case of orders to Germany and France; if interested in this route of obtaining the books, please contact Ms Csilla Viragh (who understands German): Viragh.Csilla@orac.hu. For refugee students, we have a special arrangement. Please contact Ms Isabelle Dörr or Mr Dominique Biehl. For students who wish to do preparatory reading prior to the course (no obligation), we recommend the "ABC of EU Law" by Prof. Klaus-Dieter Borchardt, which is freely available online: https://op.europa.eu/en/publication-detail/-/publication/5d4f8cde-de25-11e7-a506-01aa75ed71a1 |
Bemerkungen | Important: This is a flipped classroom course with elements of blended learning! After an introduction, students learn themselves with the help of the text books (Tobler/Beglinger, Essential EU Law in Charts and Text, 2 volumes - see under "Literatur"). Students meet regularly with the assistant to the course to discuss questions they may have on the topic and to do exercises. At crucial points in the course, meetings will be held with the professor. Both the assistant and the professor are available for online discussions throughout the course. In the framework of the flipped classroom/blended learning approach, it is important that, before coming to class, students have done the preparatory work. Accordingly, they should look up on ADAM what needs to be done even before the very first meeting (!) and prepare accordingly. The dates and times of this course will be published in due time. |
