Semester | fall semester 2011 |
Course frequency | Irregular |
Lecturers | Peter Robert Burleigh (p.burleigh@unibas.ch, Assessor) |
Content | The course has two main functions: firstly to introduce, practice and explore visual culture in general, and more specifically photography. Thus participants will be instructed in the basic terminology, characteristics and features of the field through reading a number of key critical texts. Secondly, we will apply and articulate theoretical aspects through an examination of British photography. Taking both a historical and social view of the medium, we will examine key images, practitioners and uses of photography. A second course given in the spring semester will address the time-based visual media of TV and film. |
Learning objectives | To familiarize students with key concepts in visual media. To focus critical attention on analysis of photography. To expose and extend students' knowledge in the repertoire of British photography. |
Bibliography | A course reader will be made available. |
Admission requirements | This seminar is geared primarily at BA students who have completed their 2nd year (including the paper), but Liz and MA students are welcome, too. Students should have an interest in developing their understanding of visual media in relation to text, language and semiotics. |
