10999-03 - Lecture with practical courses: Introduction to Language and Linguistics I: Structure and Use 4 CP

Content The lecture series for first semester students will provide an overview of the basic structural properties of the English language (phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax). The topics addressed include: what are the characteristics of the sound system? How can the sounds be categorized in a linguistic fashion? How can new words be formed, and how are they inflected? What makes English sentence structure special? Moreover, the structural properties of English will be discussed in a broader context of typology and linguistic methodology, and there will be work on the practical application of linguistic analysis in the Übungen.
Learning objectives Students will be familiarized with basic linguistic concepts and methodology. In combination with the Übungen that accompany these lectures, students will learn to analyze English utterances at several levels of representation.
Bibliography The obligatory book for the course is Bernd Kortmann (2009), "English Linguistics: Essentials". English Edition. Published by Cornelsen. ISBN: 978-3-464-31162-2. The book is available from the Labyrinth bookshop opposite the Seminar, Nadelberg 17, at a 10% discount. Be sure to get the English edition!

The obligatory script for the Übung "Introduction to Language and Linguistics I: Structure and Use" will be available from Print-it, Mittlere Strasse 24, from Monday 10th September. PLEASE BE SURE TO GET THE SCRIPT FOR THE ÜBUNG. IT HAS A BLACK BACK COVER. YOU SHOULD ALSO GET THE "MANUAL FOR PAPERS IN ENGLISH LINGUISTICS" available as of 14th September from Print-it.

Course application Students are required to enter their name and e-mail address on one of the four Übungen group lists which will be put up at the department (2nd floor, entrance hall) one week before the beginning of the semester. Places per group are limited.

Assessment details This course will be evaluated with two written exams which together have to average 60 percent. Marks of below 50 percent for either exam cannot be compensated.
