33343-01 - Lecture: Parler plurilingue, multilingual talk, Mehrsprachigkeit 2 CP

Semester spring semester 2013
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Lorenza Mondada (lorenza.mondada@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content The majority of speakers of the world are bilinguals – this shows that language contact is the rule rather than an exception and that multilingualism is omnipresent in the contemporary world. The course aims at discussing the variety of manifestations of multilingualism in a diversity of speakers’ practices, spoken as well as written. The course will also consider examples of various contexts and activities that reveal the rich variation of multilingual practices : code-switching, code-mixing, crossing, use of lingua franca, various uses of L2, etc. The course will offer a typology of situations of language contact and hybridization, mainly based on French and English, but also considering other languages. Special attention will be given to the situated activities of speakers and to their linguistic choices in context – on the basis of a rich array of textual and interactional data. The course aims at conceptualizing the analytical issues raised by these materials but also at thinking about societal and applied issues – concerning for instance the management of international professional settings, of services to immigrant customers, of language training at school and at work, of translation, etc.
The course will be given in English, French and German.
