18894-01 - Seminar: Sociolinguistic Perspectives on Literacy 3 CP

Semester fall semester 2013
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Danièle Klapproth Muazzin (daniele.klapproth@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Embracing an understanding of literacy as 'the situated, communicative social practices of reading and writing', we will in this seminar explore literacy from a practice-oriented, cross-cultural and critical perspective. We will seek to understand how literacy practices are affected by social and material conditions, implicated in power relations and embedded in specific cultural meanings. With such a focus on the sociolinguistic, sociohistorical and political dimensions of literacy, we will address questions such as: What are the relationships between orality, literacy, and illiteracy? What are the tensions, in particular contexts, between colonial legacies and post-colonial, indigenous transformations of situated literacy practices? What are the relationships between print literacies and electronic, screen-based multimedia literacies in today's text-saturated, digital world? What are the relations between literacy practices and the knowledge economy? How are local literacy practices impacted by global, transnational flows?
Learning objectives By engaging with theoretical perspectives and by critically examining a range of empirical case studies from various sociocultural contexts, we will aim to deepen our understanding of the intricate relationships between literacy practices, power/knowledge and social change.
Bibliography Reading material will be made available online (ISIS online platform).
