14254-01 - Seminar: Integrative Methods 3 CP

Semester spring semester 2014
Course frequency Every spring sem.
Lecturers Paul Burger (paul.burger@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Sustainability science is expected to study future societal developments on the background of risks and challenges stemming from global scarcity of ecological resources. Accordingly, it strives not only to understand the complex interactions between say ecological, economic and societal factors but also to study possible future outcomes and developments given today's options for action.
However, science will only be able to serve that expectation in case it is able to produce knowledge on development options by using sound methods. The seminar will introduce two qualitative methods, one for system analysis, one for scenario building. The students will have the task to use them for a virtual case study. In addition, we will debate strengths and weaknesses of the methods in question.
Learning objectives Students
- understand merits and limits of qualitative system analysis and scenario building for sustainability issues;
- are able to accomplish a system analysis and a scenario construction (based on IT-tool).
Bibliography A list will be handed out at the beginning of the seminar.
