| Content | Deixis is at the core of language, anchoring linguistic forms and grammar to the actual context of their use - as in deictic expressions such as I(you, here, now. This course presents various linguistic approaches to personal, spatial and temporal deixis. It shows how typological and linguistic anthropological studies of deictic systems in a diversity of languages of the wold reveal a rich and complex conception of the location of the speaker in space and time. It also shows how these deictic expression work in actual linguistic uses - in texts as well as in talk, studied from discursive approaches. Finally, it shows how deictic expressions are indissociable from gestures and the body in action and in interaction. An extensive bibliography will be made available on ADAM and the course will discuss both theoretical perspectives and a rich diversity of empirical data. |
