39983-01 - Seminar: Intertextuality: Discourse-analytical and ethnographic perspectives 3 CP

Semester spring semester 2015
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Danièle Klapproth Muazzin (daniele.klapproth@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content The theory of intertextuality suggests that texts, rather than existing as self-contained, autonomous entities, are formed by the repetition, recontextualisation, and transformation of other textual structures, prior text. Originating in the fields of semiotics and post-structuralist theory (and being closely associated with the names of Julia Kristeva and Mikhail Bakhtin), the concept of intertextuality has been taken up also within linguistically oriented frameworks, where it has been further enhanced by discourse scholars, linguistic anthropologists, sociocultural linguists and scholars of cognitive linguistics. Drawing on these rich and multifaceted theorical backgrounds, we will seek to operationalise the notion of intertextuality to analyse a wide range of discursive practices (including, for instance, speakers' incorporation of media texts into their private conversations, family members' recycling of prior text in the negotiation of a family argument, the parodic reanimation of a politican's words by a protest movement, or the role of master narratives in newspaper reporting or in the construction of racism in conversational narratives).
Learning objectives We will aim to deepen our understanding of the very nature of communicative interaction as we seek to understand how all 'languaging' (in the words suggested by Alton Becker) may be thought of as "taking old language and pushing it into present contexts".
Bibliography Reading material will be made available online (using ADAM).
