45104-01 - Lecture: The five senses: language and sensoriality 2 CP

Semester fall semester 2016
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Lorenza Mondada (lorenza.mondada@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Despite sensoriality is a fundamental dimension of human experience in and of the world, involving the body, as people feel the material environment and language, as they talk about their feelings, sensoriality remains a neglected area in linguistics and more generally in the social sciences. This course aims at exploring the interdisciplinary contributions to the study of the 5 senses, including linguistic and cognitive approaches, uncovering the way languages typologically diverse categorize the sensorium, and cultural and historical approaches, interested in beliefs, norms, myths and socio-cultural practices involved in sensing the material world. The focus will be both on a diversity of approaches and methodologies and on the way the different senses have been discussed. On the basis of and in dialogue with the existing literature, an original perspective on language and sensoriality in social interaction will be proposed.
Bibliography Literature will be available on ADAM at the beginning of the semester.
