46886-01 - Seminar: Double Fail: Generative Aspects of the #fail in Media, Art and Literature 3 CP

Semester spring semester 2017
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Peter Robert Burleigh (p.burleigh@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Failure is not necessarily the same as lack of success. This seminar will consider the ways in which failure can be a productive force in culture. We will consider failure from a broad perspective: practical failures, such as, Henry Talbot's poor sketching skills as catalytic to his invention of photography; personal failings, questioning identity though self-deprecating poetry; structural failures of Capitalism in the Anthropocene; the failures in the digital/viral world that are generative rather than lacking.
Learning objectives Students will learn about a variety of failings that strike a cultural discord and hence can be considered generative. They will be able to work with peers in developing an analytical approach to the material, as well as voicing and advancing a critical voice. The detailing and inquiry into cultural material will suggest how we engage with a contemporary way of life beyond "fail".
Bibliography Readings will be distributed via ADAM before the course starts. Participants will be notified of a "watching" list before the start of term.
Comments The seminar is now full. If you write to alex.van-lierde@unibas.ch, you will be placed on a waiting list. There is no guarantee of a place on the course; you are advised to choose another seminar from those on offer.
