46879-01 - Course: English Comedy Televised: a grunt of resistance in a culture of complacency 3 CP

Semester spring semester 2017
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Peter Robert Burleigh (p.burleigh@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content The tradition of comedy in Britain is strong: stemming from music hall variety through clubs, theatres, radio and to television. The television experience of comedy is dependent on format, including sit-com, comedy game shows, and the classic stand-up format. Taking a survey of comedy on TV, this ACE3 course will consider how comedy is a realm for commentary, debate and finally a voice of resistance. Thumbing its nose to the powers that be, can comedy provide England (if it still exists) with a way to remake a progressive non-conservative identity?
Learning objectives Students will learn about the background of English comedy, and how to distinguish and identify different formats of TV comedy. They will refine analytical skills in language analysis, and will be able to discuss with their peers in an informed way how comedy touches on the political in Britain.
Bibliography Readings will be distributed via ADAM before the course starts. Participants will be notified of a "watching" list before the start of term.
