Content | This course investigates the relations between colonialism, imperialism and urbanization with special reference to the historical geography of capitalism. In doing so, it will focus on the critical intersections of theories of urbanization, colonialism and imperialism, while devoting close attention to the works of Henri Lefebvre and Raymond Williams on the production of space, country and city; to anti-colonial writers such as Frantz Fanon and Edward Said; and to various radical critics of imperialism and colonialism including Samir Amin, Janet Abu-Lughod and Utsa Patnaik and G. V. S. de Silva. These diverse readings will be complemented by several films and short student presentations on selected topics. The purpose of engaging this range of theories and writers will be to develop an emancipatory understanding of urban issues from a specifically Southern or what used to be called a Third World perspective, with due emphases on such contentious issues as development and underdevelopment, Eurocentrism and Orientalism, universalism and particularity, as well as the challenges of worldwide struggles over national liberation and the right to the city. As such, the course is conceived with two primary learning objectives: first, an awareness of how colonialism, imperialism and urbanization are related within the totality of capitalism; second, an appreciation of the implications of these relations for urban and radical politics. |
Comments | This course is capped and 30 students will be the maximum with a priority for 2nd Year Critical Urbanisms Master students on timely registration. |
