72746-01 - Practical course: The Iliad Papyri (3 CP)

Semester fall semester 2024
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Isabelle Marthot-Santaniello (i.marthot-santaniello@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Papyri are a unique source to understand how ancient culture was produced, disseminated and used. Among the several thousands of literary papyri, the ones bearing Homer's Iliad are by far the most numerous, making this work THE book of antiquity. This course will combine philological, linguistic and papyrological approaches with online interventions of several specialists (Prof. Ombretta Cesca, Lausanne; Profs. Claire Le Feuvre and Benoit Laudenbach, Paris Sorbonne and Prof. Mike Sampson, Manitoba Canada). After a short introduction on papyrology and on the role of Iliad in Greek culture (education, alexandrian scholarship), the course will focus on individual papyri: their discovery, materiality and importance for the history of the text. This will offer the opportunity to reflect upon available online resources and how to possibly improve them (a future encoding of the texts on papyri.info is planned as a block seminar in Spring 2025).
Learning objectives Improve your knowledge on the major piece of ancient literature that is the Iliad.
