Course frequency | Irregular |
Lecturers | Danièle Klapproth Muazzin (daniele.klapproth@unibas.ch, Assessor) |
Content | This lecture explores the intertwined relationship between language, culture and thought, examining it through the various perspectives of language socialisation, pragmatics, sociolinguistics, and anthropological linguistics. Being interested in how language and thought affect one other, we will engage with various ways in which different languages and cultures organise, represent and express knowledge and thought. For one thing, we will investigate how grammatical and semantic systems of a language relate to the worldview, epistemology and culture of its speakers. Then, moving on to address issues of language use and cultural practice, we will investigate the role of specific discursive practices in cultivating specific forms of knowledge and thought. Topics to be addressed will include: linguistic relativity; linguistic universals; the relationship between culture and knowledge; 'local knowledge' and indigenous epistemologies; the pragmatics, politics and aesthetics of knowledge and its linguistic expression. |
Learning objectives | To deepen students' understanding of the complex and intricate relationships that hold between language, thought, culture, and social practice. |
