19948-01 - Seminar: Talking War, Talking Peace: Investigating Language in Conflict 3 CP

Semester spring semester 2008
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Danièle Klapproth Muazzin (daniele.klapproth@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Starting from an understanding of discourse as social action and of social realities as discursively constructed, we will explore how language/discourse is implicated in the processes that build, maintain or destroy peace. We will be concerned with both the representational and the interactional levels of language. With respect to the politics of representation, we will reflect critically not only on the discourses (nationalistic, racist, militaristic, economic, etc.) that promote and enable war, but also on (traditional and alternative) discourses on 'security' and 'peace'. In terms of the interactional dimensions of conflict and conflict resolution, some of the questions that we will address include the following. How do human beings understand conflict, how do they understand conflict resolution, and how do these assumptions impact their linguistic strategies in dispute negotiations? What are the cultural dimensions and complexities involved here? We will be concerned both with the theoretical dimensions of the issues concerned and with their practical implications.
Learning objectives To think critically and creatively about conflict and conflict resolution processes, and to recognise the role that linguistic practices and discursive ideologies play therein.
Bibliography A reader will be made available.
Comments We recommend that students take this seminar in combination with the MA lecture 'Language and Conflict' (19946-01, taught by Andreas Langlotz)
