Content | The course provides an overview on the diversity of natural toxins and toxin producing organisms, from different perspectives. Taxonomic, chemical, and pharmacological/toxicological aspects are discussed. Main topics include: poisonous plants and important classes of plant toxins, poisonous mushrooms, moulds and mycotoxins, toxic algae and dinoflagellates, evolution of venoms in animals, marine invertebrates, actively and passively toxic marine organisms, forms of intoxication with ingestion of seafood, toxic amphibians and reptiles. The importance of toxins for basic research and drug discovery is addressed with selected examples. Practical rules for prevention of intoxication/envenomation, and rules for first aid are also treated. |
Learning objectives | Students know the important groups of toxin and venom producing organisms. They are able to classify natural toxins/venoms according to their structural class and mode of action. They knwo the geographic disribution of dangerous venomous animals. They are able to translate this knowledge into practical recommendations for prevention and first aid. They understand the importance of natural toxins for biomedical research and drug discovery. |
