Content | This subject explores the importance of empire for the study of the Bible and its history of reception. It introduces students to the major hegemonic expansionist states, or “empires,” that shaped the history of ancient Israel (especially those of Egypt, Assyria, Babylonia, Persia and Greece). It explores the range and nature of responses to these empires that are preserved in the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament, as well as Israel’s own “colonial” aspirations in the imaginative description of the conquest of Canaan. Particular attention is paid to the relevance of postcolonial theory for the exegesis of the Bible, with the aim of strengthening students’ skills in judiciously applying socio-scientific models to the study of ancient texts and historical contexts. The subject also considers the reception history of the Bible in more contemporary contexts: its use in supporting the interests of imperialism and colonial expansion, as well as its mobilization against such interests. |
Learning objectives | Upon successful completion of this subject, students should demonstrate: • knowledge of the imperial contexts that influenced the history of ancient Israel and the formation of the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament • understanding of postcolonial criticism and its relevance for biblical studies |
