Content | This seminar wants to explore and understand the disciplinary and historical foundations of ‘scale’, i.e. the hierarchical organisation of our world. Recently, there has been a notable return to questions of scale across the disciplines, partly undertaken in response to the ubiquitousness of climate change and the remarkable career of the Anthropocene as an innovative concept. In the seminar we will be especially interested in how the humanities and social sciences have responded to the re-emergence of scale and consider e.g. the debates initiated by Dipesh Chakrabarty’s The Climate of History (2009), Sallie Marston et al.’s Human Geography without Scale (2005), and Bruno Latour’s Anti-Zoom, i.e. his categorical rejection of scale (2017). Against the backdrop of these discussions, the seminar wishes to explore new terrain by shifting attention towards the ways in which different media – textual, graphic, visual – shape what we are able to perceive and know at different levels of analysis. How, for example, do you visualise the Anthropocene? |
