Content | Our time is witnessing unprecedented levels of migration and population displacement. These lectures will survey and investigate spaces of refuge and forced migration as well as other forms of camps, contextualizing them within the corresponding discourses of humanitarianism and political philosophy. Specific case studies, taken from throughout the 20th and 21st century, will allow a spatial and urbanistic view onto, and critique of, debates such as spaces of control and the State of Exception, “Responsibility to Protect”, development theory, notions of modernism and the refugee regime of UNHCR. While a certain geographic focus will lie on the African continent, the lectures will explore the notion of the camp also within the European context. The following topics, amongst others, will be addressed: - regime of administration and the definition of the refugee - stories and histories of the camp - planning strategies - mappings and documentations - the notion of the ‘state of exception’ - the camp in an urban environment - camp as a space of protection, camp as a space of harm - peacekeeping - the camp as a political project - afterlives of the camp: from camp to city |
