Content | Most of us have learned at some point that stereotypes, prejudices, and racism are normatively reprehensible. Yet, all of us think and act in stereotypical, prejudiced, and even racist ways. In the first part of this course, we will explore conceptual variations of these constructs from a sociological and psychological perspective before we study their origins and consequences in different social and cultural contexts. In the second part of the course, we will expand our focus to link the three constructs to identity and intergroup conflict and cooperation. The second part will be dominated by a sociological and social psychological focus. Seminar participants will learn how to avoid some forms of prejudice and racism as individuals, during interactions with others, and as members of groups and institutions. |
Learning objectives | - Identify forms of stereotypes, prejudice, and racism - Know about some of their origins and consequences - Reflect on how identity and intergroup relations and cooperation are associated with prejudice and racism - Explore ways to reduce prejudice and racism individually, relationally, and institutionally |
