Content | Description: The course will clarify concepts related to climate change direct and indirect effects on health, extreme events, vulnerability, resilience, adaptive capacities, mitigation, adaptation and sustainability. It will present methodologies and frameworks for multidisciplinary assessment of vulnerabilities and health risks to increase resilience of communities and enable socio-economic benefits. It will show also how climate related policies will affect public health and present case studies from different perspectives and contexts. Content: Climate change processes and how do they affect several sectors, Different pathways of climate change specific impact on health, Climate change effects on major water related diseases, Climate change effects on major vector borne diseases, Effects of climate extreme events on morbidity and mortality;(A): case of heat waves; (B): case of flood, Integrated climate change and health risks assessment methodologies and frameworks (A): predictions, time series analyses; (B): vulnerabilities, resilience and adaptive capacities, Mitigation and adaptation measures for public health, including policy and governance dimensions, General concepts and frameworks for disaster risk reduction, Economic concepts of health and climate change |
Learning objectives | The objective of the course is to provide participants with updated evidence on the links between climate change and health (with an emphasis on major water and vector-borne diseases and possible effects of some extreme events like floods and heats on morbidity and mortality), as well as the ways for mitigation and adaptation measures to protect public health in both developed and developing countries, to sustain ecosystems and to reinforce local governance, sectorial and policy actors. |
