43701-01 - Seminar: Interdisciplinary Approach to Sustainability 3 CP

Semester spring semester 2020
Course frequency Every spring sem.
Lecturers Jasmin Godemann (jasmin.godemann@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content The seminar is offered within the scope of the trans-faculty program "Sustainable
Development (TQ NE)". The program consists of 3 introductory lectures with practical courses
(lecture A + B, offered in fall semesters; lecture C offered in spring semesters) dedicated to
conveying the foundations of sustainable development. This additional integrative seminar (= course D)
engages with interdisciplinary work.
With a broad understanding of food being not just physiological necessity but rather a 'social total phenomenon' interrelated with all aspects of life this seminar will propose, consider and analyze the different relationships between communication and food and how these relationships negotiate our identities, cultures and environments. We discuss the concepts of inter- and transdisciplinarity which offer a lens through which to view sustainable food culture and its complexity. We understand how mediated communication about food shape and reflect our food culture and we analyze the role of visual communication in relation to sustainable food.
A range of classroom exercises will provide hands-on experience in developing strategies and approaches in dealing with complexity and sustainable food communication.

Learning objectives - Understand the symbolic importance of food in the communicative practices of our society.
- Awareness of the complexity of the relationships between food and sustainability and be familiar with the research principles inter- and transdisciplinary.
