Course frequency | Irregular |
Lecturers | Daria Dayter (daria.dayter@unibas.ch, Assessor) |
Content | This course will introduce students to the methods of corpus linguistics, i.e. the study of language on the basis of computerized collections of naturally occurring texts (written or spoken), aka corpora (sing. corpus). We will focus in particular on quantitative approaches, based on frequencies of occurrence and co-occurrence of words, grammatical features, and extralinguistic information. Through selected publications, we will see how linguistic generalizations can be derived from quantitative corpus data in various domains of investigation. Students will learn the rudiments of how to conduct a corpus study, and will be introduced to a few popular corpora of English. |
Learning objectives | At the end of this course, students should (1) know the basic principles of corpus linguistics, (2) know what kind of quantitative information can be derived from corpora, and (3) be aware of the methodological concerns involved. They should also acquire practical skills in handling corpus data, which they will put to use for their written assignment. |
Bibliography | Texts will be made available on ADAM. |
