Content | It has been argued that "globalization forces sociolinguistics ... to rethink itself as a sociolinguistics of mobile resources, framed in terms of trans-contextual networks, flows and movements" (Blommaert 2010: 1). Such rethinking is especially important in the case of English, which is widely considered to be the language of globalization. This course examines how English, as used in multilingual environments and as part of multilingual repertoires, may be examined within the conditions of globalization. It explores how globalization produces mobilities and inequalities and the roles that English plays in such an uneven and shifting world. To do this, the course introduces students to some of the conceptual tools of the emerging field of the "sociolinguistics of globalization" and invites them to reconsider sociolinguistic data in English in the light of these tools. Topics may include, but are not limited to, the commodification of English and English in the service economy. |
