62185-01 - Seminar: Memory: Recent Theories and Ancient Mediterranean Texts 3 CP

Semester fall semester 2021
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Sonja Ammann (sonja.ammann@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Stephen Germany (stephen.germany@unibas.ch)
Jenna Stover (jenna.kemp@unibas.ch)
Content The study of ancient literature is frequently burdened with questions concerning the historicity of its contents. However, by bringing this literature into contact with collective/cultural memory studies, we can ask new questions about how the past is represented in these texts, how ancient authors shape our perceptions of the past, and how cultural materials themselves traverse time. In this course, we will read classic texts and contemporary approaches to memory studies and discuss how they might interface with ancient literature. During the semester, we will read several theorists of collective memory and discuss our readings in 3 meetings (Oct. 20, Nov. 17, Dec. 15, 1-4 pm). On January 12-13, we will meet for a workshop to discuss our own case studies and how the use of memory approaches can shed new light on ancient texts. The organizers' own research focus lies on ancient Judean literature (Hebrew and Greek biblical texts). Participants are welcome to present their own work on other ancient Mediterranean literature. Prof. Sylvie Honigman (Tel Aviv) will join us for this workshop with a contribution on memory studies and ancient Greek literature.
