63548-01 - Research seminar: Intercultural Pragmatics 4 CP

Semester fall semester 2021
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Carolin Debray (carolin.debray@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content In this seminar, we will explore the conection between culture and language through a focus on pragmatics. Taking a comparative approach initially, we will explore the ways different languages solve pragmatic issues by investigating specific speech acts (e.g. apologies), but also investigate language use in specific contexts such as making friends or flirting and discuss the ways cultural believes underpin these linguistic choices. We will then consider des implications of this for intercultural interactions and investigate concepts such as the notion of discursive interculture, and research into lingua franca interactions.

The course will be taught in English and both English and German will be languages we investigate, but other languages are also warmly welcome and will enrich the course.
Learning objectives • Get to know recent research in the area of intercultural communication
• Gain a deeper understanding of the connections between language and culture in everyday interactions
• Apply theories to naturally occuring data and critically reflect on the world around you through a theoretical lense
• Develop research and analytical skills in the area of pragmatics
Bibliography We will read a different published research article each week – these will be made available to you at the beginning of the course.
