Content | Course convener: Prof. Mike Fetters, Director of the Mixed Methods Program and Professor of Family Medicine, University of Michigan Mixed methods research, the intentional integration of qualitative and quantitative research approaches in a line of inquiry, has emerged as a third research methodology in addition to qualitative and quantitative methodologies. Participants in this workshop will gain insight into essential aspects of integration of qualitative and quantitative approaches as mixed methods research. The interactive workshop uses an applied approach through personalized, focused activities. While referencing workshop presentations and an exemplar study, participants will apply the material to their own projects by completing worksheet activities, and by reinforcing their comprehension by providing constructive feedback to others. Those without their own projects will work on an assigned project in small groups. After an overview presentation, participants will engage in a “mixed methods research treasure hunt”. Additional activities will focus on achieving integration in the narrative justification of the project, identifying details of mixed data sources, incorporating philosophy and theory, creating a design figure, developing an implementation matrix, and joint display of integrated data collection for the study. At the completion of the workshop, participants will have acquired knowledge about fundamental aspects of mixed methods research. They will have applied these essentials through interactions with peer colleagues and the course instructors during workshop activities as well as through creation of tables and figures optionally personalized to their own research topics. Completed worksheets will serve as a tangible product for participant use after the course. |
