Content | The Visual History Lab at the Centre for African Studies takes place yearly. It is a learning format, which allows students to spend one week working intensively on a particular topic. The lab ends with a public event, which students organise themselves. The Visual History Lab 2022 is concerned with the striking parallels between the migrant labour system in Switzerland and the one in apartheid South Africa. It explores how filmmakers of the time (1960s-1980s) engaged with these dehumanizing systems. Thereby we raise questions about the memory and historical resonance of these systems both in present-day Europe and Africa. Ideas for the concluding public event include the screening of historical films, talks with filmmakers, and the re-staging of historical exhibitions that focused on exploitative migrant labour systems. |
