67110-01 - Seminar: Disparate Realities: The Fragmentation and Segregation of Space in the Occupied West Bank since the Oslo Accords 3 CP

Semester fall semester 2022
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Moritz Haegi (moritz.haegi@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content The failure of the Oslo process and the corresponding retention and routinization of the Oslo area regime in the occupied West Bank (Area A, B and C) has led to the de-facto-formalization of spatial segregation between Israelis and Palestinians in the territory conquered from Jordan in 1967. This segregation unfolds in a variety of ways: checkpoints, the permit regime and – more insidiously – mobility and transportation infrastructure planning. As such, it has far-reaching consequences for the lived realities of Jewish settlers and Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem. This course will elaborate on the settler colonial objectives and practices that have incrementally established spatial segregation as a privilege under a “racialized legal framework” in the post-Oslo era. To this end, theoretical concepts and specific instances of spatial fragmentation will complement each other, thus allowing students to think about segregationist dynamics holistically.
