Content | In the past decade, multispecies ethnography has established itself as an important sub-field of anthropology. Seeking to move beyond anthropocentrism, multispecies ethnography looks at the many entanglements between people, animals, plants, and other organisms such as fungi or microbes. In the context of growing concerns around the climate crisis and biodiversity loss, and in the midst of interdisciplinary discussions about the Anthropocene, multispecies ethnography is an opportunity to make a contribution to these debates from the perspective of social sciences. More specifically, anthropologists have invited us to reconsider common dichotomies such as nature/culture or human/non-human. This proseminar offers an introduction to the emerging field of multispecies ethnography. We will explore the new modes of research and writing opened up by multispecies ethnography by reading key texts and looking into case studies both from the global North and the global South. |
Learning objectives | In this course, you will: - familiarise yourself with key theories and debates around multispecies ethnography and anthropology beyond the human - gain insights in multispecies approaches by reading and analysing case studies in the forms of books and films - improve your abilities to critically read and discuss academic texts, to hold presentations and moderate discussions, and to write short essays |
Bibliography | A list of the relevant literature will be distributed at the beginning of the semester. The texts will be made available on ADAM. |
Comments | Depending on the participants' skills and preferences, this proseminar can be taught in English or German. Most of the literature will be in English, but some books are also available in German. IMPORTANT: There will be no class in presence on February 20. The first session will be replaced by self-study (readings and forum on ADAM). Our first meeting in presence will take place on March 6. |
