67621-01 - Seminar: Peasants in African History 3 CP

Semester spring semester 2023
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Julia Tischler (julia.tischler@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content This seminar focuses on peasants, discussing how female and male rural producers experienced and shaped historical change in Africa in the late 19th and 20th centuries. We discuss several classic historical texts, which analyzed the role and fate of African peasantries under the impact of commercialization and capitalism, peasants’ political discourses, and their role in nationalist movements. The seminar furthermore addresses the question of how scholars have researched African peasants, including the use of oral sources. Drawing on original sources, course participants will also be guided towards conducting their own research on African peasants. A parallel attendance of the lecture “Agriculture in Africa” is recommended (although not mandatory).
