58613-01 - Internship: Multivariate Data Analysis in Palaeoecology 2 CP

Semester fall semester 2023
Course frequency Every fall sem.
Lecturers Colin Courtney-Mustaphi (colin.courtney-mustaphi@unibas.ch)
Oliver Heiri (oliver.heiri@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Palaeoecological datasets are often complex with entries for each sample consisting of abundances of different species in this sample, and in many cases also independent environmental or palaeoenvironmental information. In this course we will examine how such multivariate palaeoecological datasets can be analysed using numerical analyses. Topics covered include visualization of relationships in complex multivariate datasets, direct and indirect gradient analysis, classification/cluster analysis, zonation analysis and transfer functions. Since modern ecological abundance data are similar to palaeoecological datasets the course may also be of interest for students interested in analyzing ecological patterns in modern community data. Students are recommended to keep the day after the course free for finalizing the course report.
