68793-01 - Seminar: Leadership I: Navigating Roles and Contexts 1 CP

Semester spring semester 2023
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Dorothee Bentz (dorothee.bentz@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content The course will be held by Andrea Kleinhuber, leadership development professional (Universitätsspital Basel).

This workshop will explore challenges and opportunities of taking on leadership responsibilities as a doctoral student and highlight some key skills associated with effective leadership. However, the aim is not to offer universal rules or simple recipes for success. Instead, through interactive exercises and guided reflections, participants will investigate their experiences and assumptions around leadership and how these might be conducive or limiting with regard to their efficacy and role satisfaction as leaders. In doing so, participants will reflect on their emerging leadership profiles and identify what might be their signature strengths as well as areas for development.

We will consider hierarchical as well as horizontal and informal leadership settings and the importance of clear mandates and roles, particularly when leading from some form of “sandwich”-position. Further, different models and frames for understanding organizational contexts and dynamics will be ad-dressed. By expanding and differentiating their cognitive maps of organizations, teamwork and leadership, participants will add flexibility to how they define problems and challenges in leadership and thereby increase their repertoire of solution-seeking approaches.
Comments The workshop is offered by the doctoral program PI-PSY. PhD students who are not part of the doctoral program PI-PSY please apply for admission to the workshop before course registration by sending an e-mail to the program dicrector Prof. Dr. Jens Gaab (jens.gaab@unibas.ch).
